Front-loading washer and dryer pairs on a pedestal platform are the space-optimization choice for most laundry rooms. The pedestal raises the machines to a more ergonomic working height and provides a shallow drawer for laundry supplies. Stacking front-loaders on a vertical kit is the alternative for very compact spaces where floor area is more constrained than height.

Folding counter is the single highest-impact addition to a laundry room renovation. A counter above a front-load pair — at standard counter height of 36 inches — provides a flat folding surface that eliminates the need to carry laundry to another room. If the room has side wall space, a full folding counter running wall-to-wall provides an even larger work surface.
