Planning Your Renovation
Adding a bathroom, moving a kitchen sink, or creating a laundry room requires plumbing rough-in work that must happen before walls are closed — knowing what's involved helps you plan your renovation correctly.
Plumbing rough-in refers to the installation of drain, waste, vent (DWV) and supply pipes within walls and floors before the surfaces are finished. Rough-in happens before drywall is installed or flooring is laid, because access to the framing cavity is required to route the pipes.
What the Process Looks Like
Drain pipe sizing and slope are the critical design parameters for any DWV installation. Drain pipes must slope at a minimum of 1/4 inch per foot toward the main drain stack to ensure self-draining without accumulation. Pipe sizing follows Ontario Plumbing Code requirements: 3-inch minimum for toilet, 2-inch for lavatory and tub, 1.5-inch for small fixtures.
Venting is often the most complex part of a bathroom rough-in. Every fixture that drains into the DWV system must also be vented — connected to a vent pipe that rises to the exterior through the roof — to prevent siphoning of the trap seal and sewer gas entry into the home. Vent routing through framing must be coordinated with the structural and wall layout.
Working With D&D Interior Services
Supply lines for hot and cold water are typically 1/2-inch copper or PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) in residential applications. PEX is flexible, doesn't require soldering, is highly freeze-resistant, and is the dominant material for new residential plumbing. Connections are made with push-fit fittings (SharkBite) or crimp connections for permanent installations.
Permit and inspection requirements for plumbing rough-in work: any new or relocated plumbing in Ontario requires a plumbing permit and rough-in inspection by the building department. The inspector must verify drain sizing, slope, venting, and waterproofing before surfaces are closed. D&D Interior Services coordinates licensed plumbing trades and permit management on all projects with plumbing scope.
