Laundry Room Flooring: Why Tile Is the Right Choice

Choosing the Right Flooring

The laundry room experiences more water exposure, chemical contact, and heavy appliance loads than almost any other room — tile is the flooring that handles all of these conditions without compromise.

Ceramic and porcelain tile withstand the accidental water exposure that's inevitable in a laundry room — overflowing washing machine, wet laundry dripped from transfer, and water from drainage connections. Unlike wood, LVP, or laminate, tile will not swell, warp, or delaminate from water exposure.

Installation and Timeline

Chemical resistance is the specification that matters most in laundry rooms. Laundry detergents, bleach, and fabric softeners are all present in the environment. Tile is impervious to all common laundry chemicals; most other flooring materials show surface degradation from chemical exposure over time.

Appliance loading: washing machines and dryers on hard-mount pedestals or directly on the floor concentrate significant weight and vibration into the floor area. Heavy appliances on resilient flooring (LVP, vinyl sheet) can indent the material over time. Tile's rigidity handles appliance weight without compression.

Care and Maintenance

Large-format tile (300 x 600 mm or 600 x 600 mm) in a laundry room with minimal furniture creates a clean, easy-to-clean floor with few grout lines. Specifying a non-slip surface texture (COF above 0.60) and a light to mid-tone colour that doesn't show lint and dust accumulation immediately makes the floor practical.

Drain installation under a laundry room floor tile installation: if the existing subfloor includes a floor drain, ensure that the tile installation maintains drainage slope toward the drain. A floor drain in a laundry room is valuable insurance against appliance overflows; blocking it or creating a negative slope toward it defeats its purpose.
