Kitchen Renovation Planning
Grout is one of the most neglected surfaces in any home — professional cleaning and sealing restores appearance and prevents the moisture damage that leads to mould and tile failure.
Grout is a porous cement-based material that absorbs water, oils, soap residue, and organic matter continuously. Without sealing and regular cleaning, grout darkens, stains permanently, and provides a substrate for mould and mildew growth. In bathrooms, deteriorated grout allows moisture to penetrate behind the tile, causing adhesive failure and eventual tile detachment.
Design and Material Selection
Professional tile and grout cleaning uses specialized rotary brushes and high-pH alkaline cleaning solutions to break down and extract embedded soils from deep within the grout pores. Consumer cleaning products work on the surface but rarely penetrate deep enough to remove the years of accumulation that cause dark, stained grout.
Steam cleaning is highly effective for grout without the use of harsh chemicals. The heat and pressure of the steam loosens organic matter and kills mould spores on contact. For grout that is severely stained or mould-colonized, a professional steam clean followed by a bleach-based mould treatment is the most thorough approach.
Project Timeline and Costs
Sealing grout after cleaning is what prevents rapid re-soiling. Penetrating sealer fills the pores of the grout, creating a moisture barrier that repels water and reduces absorption of soils. Sealed grout cleans much more easily and stays lighter longer. In bathrooms, resealing annually is the standard recommendation.
Colour-sealing grout is a premium option that combines cleaning, sealing, and colour restoration in one application. A coloured penetrating sealer is applied to clean grout, restoring its original colour and sealing it simultaneously. This is a durable solution for grout that has stained beyond what cleaning alone can restore.
