Kitchen Renovation Planning
A kitchen island transforms workflow, adds storage, and creates a social hub in the most-used room in the house — these configurations work across common Ontario kitchen layouts.
A kitchen island requires a minimum of 90 cm of clearance on all working sides, and 120 cm is more comfortable for two people to work around simultaneously. In typical semi-detached and detached homes in Kitchener-Waterloo with kitchens in the 12 to 16 square metre range, there's usually room for an island of 90 x 150 cm or larger.
Design and Material Selection
The waterfall edge has become the signature design detail of contemporary kitchen islands. The countertop material continues vertically down the side of the island to the floor, creating a seamless, sculptural surface. Quartz, porcelain slab, and butcher block all work well in waterfall configurations.
A contrasting colour on the island creates a focal point within the kitchen. A navy blue, forest green, or charcoal island base against white perimeter cabinets is one of the strongest kitchen design statements in current renovation work. The island reads as furniture rather than built-in cabinetry, giving the kitchen a layered, collected feel.
Project Timeline and Costs
Seating at the island requires an overhang of 25 to 30 cm from the base cabinet face for knee clearance. Standard bar-height stools (450 mm seat height) work for a counter-height overhang (900 mm). Taller bar stools (650 mm seat height) work for bar-height overhangs (1050 mm). Mixing heights in a kitchen reads as unresolved — choose one and apply it consistently.
Storage configuration below the island should address items that are used most frequently from the island location: small appliances, baking supplies, wine storage, pot and pan lids. Deep drawers are more functional than doors-and-shelf configurations for most island storage applications.
