Kitchen Cabinet Painting: A Budget-Friendly Alternative to Full Replacement

By D&D Interior Services Team January 15, 2026 5 min read Blog

Painting existing kitchen cabinets achieves a fresh, modern look at 20 to 30% of the cost of cabinet replacement — but the process is labour-intensive and requires proper technique for lasting results.

Kitchen Renovation Planning

Painting existing kitchen cabinets achieves a fresh, modern look at 20 to 30% of the cost of cabinet replacement — but the process is labour-intensive and requires proper technique for lasting results.

Cabinet repainting is appropriate when the existing cabinet boxes are structurally sound, properly installed, and have good layout. If the layout itself is the problem — insufficient storage, poor workflow between work zones, outdated configuration — painting doesn't solve it. But for kitchens where the bones are right and the finish is tired, paint is transformative.

Design and Material Selection

Surface preparation is the most time-consuming part of a cabinet paint project and the most important. All cabinet doors and drawer fronts should be removed and painted separately (off the cabinet boxes). Hardware must be removed. Surfaces must be degreased thoroughly, lightly sanded, and primed with a high-adhesion primer before topcoats are applied.

Grease is the primary preparation challenge in kitchen cabinets. Years of cooking residue create a contamination layer that prevents paint adhesion. TSP (trisodium phosphate) cleaner or a dedicated degreasing preparation product removes this residue before sanding. Skipping this step results in paint that peels within 12 to 18 months regardless of paint quality.

Project Timeline and Costs

Alkyd/oil-based paint produces the hardest, most durable finish for cabinets but requires mineral spirits for cleanup, has higher VOCs, and takes longer to dry. Waterborne alkyd (also called water-based alkyd) provides similar hardness and levelling characteristics with easier cleanup and lower VOC content — it's the current professional standard for cabinet painting.

Brush marks and roller stipple are the most common quality issues in DIY cabinet painting. Professionals use combination brush-and-roll technique (brush on, then lightly back-roll) or spray application for glass-smooth results. Sprayed cabinets have the flattest, most factory-like finish but require complete masking of the kitchen during application.
