Kitchen Renovation Planning
A backsplash protects the wall behind the cooking and prep area while adding one of the most visible design opportunities in the kitchen.
Ceramic and porcelain tile remain the dominant backsplash choice. They're durable, heat-resistant, waterproof, and available in thousands of sizes, colours, and surface textures. The 3x6 subway tile in white has been the bestselling backsplash format for over a decade — and for good reason: it's classic, works with virtually every kitchen style, and is easy to clean.
Design and Material Selection
Natural stone backsplash — marble, travertine, or slate — provides premium visual texture unavailable in ceramic. The trade-off is porosity: natural stone backsplashes require sealing and are more vulnerable to staining from cooking oils and tomato-based splashes. Honed finishes are more forgiving of etching from acids than polished finishes.
Glass tile backsplash is popular for its light-reflective quality, which amplifies the impact of under-cabinet lighting. Glass is non-porous and stain-resistant, but more fragile during installation and more expensive per square foot than ceramic. Frosted glass tile is a practical alternative that provides the light diffusion effect without the visual busyness of fully reflective glass.
Project Timeline and Costs
Peel-and-stick backsplash products have improved significantly in quality. High-quality vinyl and thin-film stone products are appropriate for light-use areas and rental properties where tile installation isn't practical. They're not recommended for areas immediately adjacent to the stove where heat exposure is significant.
Grout selection for a backsplash should be done simultaneously with the tile selection. Unsanded grout is correct for tile joints 3 mm or narrower (standard for subway tile). Epoxy grout, while more expensive and harder to work with, is completely stain-proof and appropriate for lighter grout colours in the cooking zone where staining risk is highest.
