Kitchen Renovation Planning
Where appliances are positioned relative to each other and to traffic flow affects how the kitchen functions for everyday cooking and family life.
The cooking zone — stove, range hood, and an adjacent prep surface — should be positioned away from main traffic paths through the kitchen. Cooking involves hot surfaces, open flames, and steam; a cook working at the stove shouldn't be in the path of traffic moving between dining and other areas of the home.
Design and Material Selection
Refrigerator placement at the entry zone of the kitchen allows household members to access drinks and snacks without entering the cooking work area. This separation is especially valuable in family kitchens where children frequently access the refrigerator.
Dishwasher positioning adjacent to the sink is the functional requirement — dishwashers must be connected to both water supply and drain. Standard positioning is immediately to the right or left of the sink. Left-of-sink placement allows right-handed users to load dishes from the sink area with more natural motion.
Project Timeline and Costs
Microwave placement options: above the range (over-range microwave) saves counter space but positions the microwave above comfortable reaching height for shorter users and creates a risk of scalding when removing hot liquids. Counter-level or built-in drawer microwaves are more ergonomic and increasingly preferred.
Wine fridges, beverage centres, and second refrigerators are best positioned at the perimeter of the kitchen near the dining area, or in an island. This positioning creates a beverage zone that guests can access without entering the cooking workspace.
