Interior Door Upgrade: How a Simple Change Transforms Every Room

Understanding Interior Door Upgrade: How a Simple Change Transforms Every Room | D&D Interior Services

Replacing hollow-core interior doors with solid doors, changing profiles, or upgrading hardware is one of the most underappreciated interior renovation upgrades.

Most builder-grade homes come with hollow-core doors — a lightweight door consisting of a cardboard honeycomb core between thin MDF faces. They're inexpensive, easy to install, and adequate for most uses. But they're thin, transmit sound easily, feel insubstantial to open and close, and are easily damaged by impact.

Key Considerations

Solid-core doors use a solid wood composite or MDF core rather than a hollow center. The weight difference is substantial — a 32-inch hollow-core door weighs approximately 15 kg; the same door in solid core weighs 30 to 35 kg. This weight change improves the physical feel of the door, significantly reduces sound transmission, and dramatically extends the door's lifespan.

Door profile selection coordinates with the trim style of the home. A 6-panel colonial door suits traditional and transitional homes. A clean, flat-slab door is correct for contemporary and minimalist interiors. Shaker-style 1-panel doors bridge traditional and contemporary aesthetics and are the current most popular renovation replacement.

Getting Started

Door hardware is the jewellery of a door upgrade. Lever handles are more accessible and ergonomic than round knobs and are recommended for all interior doors. Finish selection — brushed nickel, satin brass, matte black — should be consistent throughout a floor plan for visual cohesion. Matte black hardware is the strongest current design trend for interior hardware.

Pre-hung doors (door and frame assembled together) are the easiest installation when replacing doors in new rough openings. Slab doors (door only) are used when the existing frame is in good condition. For a home-wide door replacement, pre-hung units ensure consistent reveal around every opening.
