Drywall Taping and Mudding: Achieving a Smooth, Paint-Ready Finish

By D&D Interior Services Team January 15, 2026 5 min read Blog

Drywall finishing quality is invisible when done right and glaringly obvious when done wrong — understanding the multi-coat process explains why rushing it always shows.

Drywall Basics

Drywall finishing quality is invisible when done right and glaringly obvious when done wrong — understanding the multi-coat process explains why rushing it always shows.

Drywall finishing is a three-coat process: tape coat (first coat), fill or block coat (second coat), and skim or finishing coat (third coat). Each coat has a different function, a different consistency of compound, and must be fully dry before the next coat is applied.

Installation Process

The tape coat sets the paper or mesh tape over seams, fastener heads, and inside corners using setting-type compound. Setting compound hardens chemically rather than drying, making it harder and less prone to shrinkage. This is the foundation of the joint and must fully cure before the next coat is applied.

The fill coat builds the joint area up to near-flush with the surrounding board surface, feathering the edges over a wide band (typically 8 to 10 inches) to hide the slight crown over the tape. All-purpose joint compound is used for this and the finishing coat, mixed to a smooth, lump-free consistency.

Finishing for a Flawless Result

The skim or finishing coat is applied with very thin compound, feathered out to 16 to 18 inches on each side of the joint, and sanded to a glass-smooth surface after drying. This coat is the most visible and the one that determines the final paint result. Any ridges, streaks, or unevenness at this stage will be visible under paint in raking light.

Corner bead application covers all outside corners and provides a crisp, durable edge. Metal bead is the traditional standard; vinyl bead and tape-on bead are alternatives that resist denting better on high-traffic corners. Inside corners are taped with paper tape, creased down the centre, and finished with multiple coats of compound.
