Bathroom Renovation Essentials
A new vanity is one of the most transformative single-item bathroom upgrades — choosing the right style, size, and configuration changes how the room functions and feels.
Vanity selection in a bathroom renovation should start with measuring the available space precisely. Door swing clearance, toilet clearance, and shower door swing must all be factored before committing to a vanity width. The minimum comfortable clearance between a vanity edge and a toilet or tub is 380 mm (15 inches).
Design Choices That Matter
Freestanding vanities — those mounted on legs or a full cabinet base sitting on the floor — provide a traditional or transitional look and are simple to install without special wall preparation. Their limitation is that they don't provide the seamless, clean floor line of wall-hung models and create harder-to-clean spaces underneath.
Wall-hung (floating) vanities create a spacious, modern visual by exposing the floor beneath. They're easier to clean around and can be mounted at any height — an advantage for accommodating users of different heights or accessibility needs. The trade-off is installation complexity: the wall must be reinforced to carry the vanity load, and plumbing must be roughed in at the correct height.
Hiring the Right Contractor
Drawer configuration matters more than most buyers realize. A single door below the sink with one shelf is the minimum function level; a vanity with two or three drawers provides far more usable storage for the same cabinet footprint. Soft-close drawer slides are standard on quality vanities and worth specifying on entry-level options.
Mirror or medicine cabinet selection should be coordinated with the vanity. A single mirror over a 1200 mm double-sink vanity looks undersized; two individual mirrors, or a large mirror that spans the full vanity width, creates the proportionally balanced look of a finished room.
