Kitchen Renovation Planning
A well-executed accent wall creates a focal point, adds depth, and transforms the perceived proportions of a room — these techniques work across architectural styles.
The accent wall concept gets misapplied more often than it's done well. The key principle is that an accent wall should mark a naturally prominent surface — the wall behind a bed, the focal wall behind a sofa or television, the wall at the end of a hallway — not simply the largest wall in a room.
Design and Material Selection
Painted accent walls are the simplest and most reversible approach. A single wall in a deep, saturated colour creates contrast against the other three walls in a lighter neutral. This contrast draws the eye to the focal surface and makes the room feel more layered. The accent colour should appear elsewhere in the room — in upholstery, cushions, or artwork — to feel intentional rather than random.
Shiplap and board-and-batten accent walls add dimensional texture. Horizontal shiplap boards at regular reveal spacings create a clean, modern-farmhouse look. Vertical board-and-batten creates height on low-ceiling rooms. Both can be painted in the same colour as the surrounding walls for subtle texture, or in an accent colour for bold contrast.
Project Timeline and Costs
Wallpaper accent walls have returned as a mainstream design choice. Modern peel-and-stick wallpapers make the commitment far lower than traditional paste-on paper, and the pattern options — botanical, geometric, textural — are extraordinary. A single wallpapered wall behind a bed or sofa reads as a designed element rather than a retro throwback.
Stone or tile accent walls are appropriate in high-impact rooms where budget allows for premium material. A wall of ledge stone or large-format ceramic tile behind a fireplace, beside a staircase, or in an entry foyer creates immediate architectural interest.
