Tile Grout Maintenance: Keeping It Clean and Preventing Deterioration

Grout maintenance prevents staining and deterioration. Here's how to keep grout in good condition.

Tile Selection and Design

Grout is a porous material that absorbs stains, moisture, and organic material. Without maintenance, it deteriorates visually and structurally, eventually requiring replacement. Regular maintenance extends grout life dramatically.

Sealing is the foundation of grout maintenance. Applying a penetrating grout sealer to unsanded or sanded cement grout creates a barrier that resists staining. Seal new grout after full cure (typically 72 hours) and reseal annually or when water no longer beads on the surface.

Surface Preparation

Routine cleaning with a pH-neutral cleaner prevents the buildup that causes staining. Avoid bleach-based cleaners for regular use — bleach whitens grout temporarily but damages the surface over time, making future staining easier.

Mold and mildew in shower grout requires targeted treatment. Oxygen-bleach-based tile and grout cleaners or a diluted bleach solution applied with a grout brush removes mold effectively. Ensure adequate ventilation during and after treatment.

Installation and Grouting

Grout haze from new installation must be removed before it cures. The manufacturer specifies the window; most haze can be removed with a diluted vinegar solution or commercial haze remover within 24-48 hours of grouting.

Deteriorated grout — crumbling, cracking, or missing sections — allows water infiltration behind tile. Rake out deteriorated grout to a depth of 2-3mm and regrout with matching colour and product. Address deterioration promptly before water damage occurs behind the tile.

Epoxy grout is virtually maintenance-free but harder to work with during installation. In high-maintenance areas (kitchen backsplash, shower floor), specifying epoxy grout during installation eliminates most long-term grout maintenance.
