Soundproofing Interior Walls in Ontario Homes

Noise between rooms disrupts sleep, work, and privacy. Learn effective soundproofing approaches for Ontario residential interiors.

Understanding Soundproofing Interior Walls in Ontario Homes

Interior sound transmission is one of the most common complaints in Ontario homes — thin walls between bedrooms, noise from home offices penetrating living areas, or basement sound carrying to main floor living rooms. Effective soundproofing is achievable with the right materials and techniques.

The science of soundproofing involves two strategies: decoupling (preventing vibration from transferring through the structure) and mass (adding density to block sound). The best results combine both approaches for walls that need serious acoustic separation.

Key Considerations

Resilient channel mounting is a widely used decoupling technique. Metal channels are screwed to studs and drywall is attached to the channels rather than directly to the framing. This breaks the vibration path and significantly reduces airborne and impact noise transmission.

Mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) is an effective, flexible sound blocker that can be installed within wall cavities or over existing drywall before a new layer is added. It's particularly useful for retrofit projects where opening walls isn't practical.

Getting Started

Acoustic insulation — specifically rock wool or stone wool batts — is far superior to standard fibreglass in wall cavities. It absorbs mid and high frequency sound and provides additional fire resistance, making it a smart upgrade for bedroom and office walls.

D&D Interior Services incorporates soundproofing upgrades into both new construction and renovation projects. Whether you're finishing a basement music studio or adding a home office, we can design and execute an acoustic package that meets your needs.
