Removing Stipple Ceilings in Ontario Homes

By D&D Interior Services Team January 20, 2026 7 min read Blog

If you live in an Ontario home built before 1990, there is a good chance at least one room still has a stipple ceiling. Here is how to get rid of it safely and what the job actually involves.

What Is a Stipple Ceiling?

Stipple is the textured, bumpy ceiling finish you will recognize instantly — sometimes called popcorn, acoustic, or spray texture. It was applied with a hopper gun or roller to hide taping seams and imperfections and to absorb sound, which made it a cheap way to finish ceilings in mid-century and 1970s-80s builds.

Across Waterloo Region's older neighbourhoods — from Kitchener's east ward to the established streets of Waterloo and Cambridge — stipple ceilings are everywhere in homes of that era.

Test Before You Touch (Pre-1980 Homes)

Stipple texture installed before the early 1980s can contain asbestos. The only way to know is a lab test. Never dry-scrape, sand, or aggressively brush a stipple ceiling in an older home until a sample has been analyzed.

Sampling is inexpensive and fast. If the result is positive, Ontario regulations require licensed abatement with proper containment and disposal — it is not a job to tackle yourself. If it is negative, you can proceed with standard removal.

How Stipple Removal Works

Unpainted stipple is the easy case. We mask the room completely, mist the texture with warm water, wait for it to absorb, and scrape it off with a flat blade. The softened texture comes away in sheets onto the plastic below.

Painted stipple is far more stubborn because the paint seals out water. In those cases scraping alone rarely works cleanly, and we usually skim-coat over the texture instead to achieve a smooth result. Either way the ceiling is then sanded, primed, and painted.

Smooth Finish vs. New Texture

Most homeowners today want a flat, smooth ceiling — it looks modern, reflects light, and is easy to repaint. Achieving truly smooth requires skill with a skim coat and sanding, because every dip and trowel mark shows under ceiling light.

Alternatively, a light knockdown texture is a popular middle ground: more current than old stipple, but forgiving of minor imperfections. We walk homeowners through both options before starting.

The Mess Factor and How We Manage It

Stipple removal is genuinely messy work. Wet texture, joint compound, and sanding dust can spread through a house quickly if the space is not sealed. We protect floors and walls, seal doorways, cover HVAC returns, and clean thoroughly so the dust stays in the work area.

This containment is the single biggest difference between a professional job and a DIY one that leaves fine dust on every surface for weeks.
