Selecting Plumbing Fixtures for a Bathroom Renovation

By D&D Interior Services Team January 1, 2026 5 min read Blog

Faucets, toilets, showers, and tubs have quality ranges that span from builder-grade to premium — understanding what differentiates them helps you allocate your renovation budget intelligently.

Planning Your Renovation

Faucets, toilets, showers, and tubs have quality ranges that span from builder-grade to premium — understanding what differentiates them helps you allocate your renovation budget intelligently.

Faucet quality is determined primarily by the valve mechanism. Ceramic disc valves in quality faucets seal water off completely with a quarter turn and last for the life of the fixture without washer replacement. Ball valves and older cartridge designs are more prone to dripping and require periodic maintenance. KOHLER, Moen, Delta, and Grohe are established quality brands with certified ceramic disc cartridges.

What the Process Looks Like

WaterSense certification identifies toilets, faucets, and showerheads that meet EPA water efficiency standards. WaterSense toilets use 4.8 litres per flush or less (versus older 13 LPF fixtures). WaterSense faucets use 1.9 LPM or less (versus standard 8 LPM). For most renovation projects, specifying WaterSense fixtures is both an environmental choice and a long-term water cost benefit.

Toilet seat quality is the most frequently overlooked bathroom fixture specification. Standard plastic toilet seats with standard hinge hardware loosen, crack, and discolour within 5 to 10 years. Soft-close seats with metal hinges last significantly longer and are more comfortable. WASHLET (combined bidet/toilet seat) units are increasingly specified in KW-area renovation projects.

Showerhead water pressure and spray pattern are functions of the GPM rating and the internal distribution geometry. High-pressure narrowed spray from an 8-inch rain head requires water pressure above 45 PSI to function correctly. If your home's water pressure is below 50 PSI, test the chosen showerhead before installing to confirm performance.

Walk-in shower base options: a pre-formed acrylic or fibreglass shower base is the lowest-cost and easiest option. A tiled custom shower base provides full design flexibility but requires correct waterproofing and slope construction. Both work when correctly installed; the tiled base provides more design latitude while the pre-formed base provides a more reliable waterproofing result with less skilled-labour dependency.
