Kitchen walls face grease, moisture, and frequent cleaning — choosing the right paint product and finish protects your renovation investment for years longer than the wrong choice.

Semi-gloss or satin finish is the minimum specification for kitchen walls. Kitchen walls near the stove and above the counter accumulate grease droplets continuously. Flat or matte paint absorbs grease, stains permanently, and cannot be washed without leaving a sheen patch. Satin is the minimum for the kitchen environment; semi-gloss in the cooking zone provides better resistance.

Design and Material Selection

Scrubbable formulation: look for paint labelled as washable, scrubbable, or stain-resistant. These products include additives that increase the film hardness and stain resistance of the cured paint. Brands like Benjamin Moore Aura, Sherwin-Williams Emerald, and PPG Diamond include scrubbability as a core product feature.

Backsplash area paint: the wall area above the counter and below the upper cabinets — the backsplash zone — is the most exposed kitchen wall area. This 450 mm high section gets the most grease, the most splashing, and the most abrasive cleaning. Tile is the most durable backsplash option; if painting, use a semi-gloss or high-gloss product in this zone and expect more frequent touch-up needs than the upper walls.

Colour selection considerations for kitchens: kitchen colours function differently from living room colours because the kitchen has more fixed elements (cabinet colour, countertop material, appliances, backsplash) that the wall colour must work with. Choose the wall colour as the last element of the kitchen palette, selecting a shade that supports and complements all existing elements.

Application preparation: degrease kitchen walls thoroughly before painting. Years of cooking residue create a surface contamination layer that prevents paint adhesion regardless of paint quality. TSP substitute cleaner or a dedicated kitchen wall degreaser applied before priming ensures the paint bonds to a clean surface.
