Choosing the Right Flooring
Luxury vinyl plank flooring has earned its place as the most installed flooring type in Ontario renovations over the past decade. Its combination of waterproof performance, realistic wood visuals, durability, and accessible price point makes it the practical choice for families, rental properties, and basement applications.
Wear layer thickness is the primary quality differentiator in LVP. The wear layer is the protective clear coating on top that determines how long the floor resists scratching and wear. For residential use, 12 mil is a minimum; 20 mil is better; commercial-grade products at 28–40 mil will last decades in even high-traffic homes.
Installation and Timeline
Core construction affects both sound and feel. Standard rigid core LVP is comfortable underfoot and muffles sound effectively. The thicker the overall plank (6mm, 8mm, or 12mm), the more substantial it feels and sounds. Thicker boards also bridge minor subfloor imperfections more effectively.
Temperature stability matters enormously in Ontario's climate. LVP rated for a wider temperature installation range handles seasonal expansion and contraction better. In sunrooms, three-season rooms, or spaces with large south-facing windows, choosing a product specifically rated for high UV and temperature variation prevents gapping and buckling.
Care and Maintenance
Installation method — floating versus glue-down — depends on the application. Floating installations are faster and more DIY-accessible. Glue-down is preferred under heavy objects like kitchen islands or in high-moisture environments. Our team recommends the right method for each specific situation.
