Window Casing and Trim: Elevating Your Windows Indoors

By D&D Interior Services Team January 15, 2025 5 min read Blog

The trim surrounding your windows defines their finished look. Design options and installation guidance for Ontario homeowners.

The Value of Quality Trim

Window casing is the trim that frames your windows on the interior — the architectural detail that transitions between the window frame and the wall. It seems minor but it's one of the most visible and impactful finish details in any room.

Traditional window casing profiles include colonial, craftsman, and Victorian. Colonial casing features a rounded, layered profile with back band trim — common in older Ontario homes. Craftsman casing is flat and wide with a square edge and reveals, popular in bungalows and Prairie-style homes. Victorian profiles are more ornate with multiple stacked mouldings.

Material and Style Options

Stool-and-apron trim is the classic approach for double-hung windows. A horizontal stool (often called a sill) extends beyond the casing on both sides and is finished on the underside with an apron trim piece. This configuration adds depth and weight to the window treatment.

Contemporary windows increasingly use picture frame casing — four-sided casing with mitre joints at all corners, no stool or apron. This approach is clean and modern, works well with casement and awning windows, and photographs particularly well in real estate listings.

Professional Installation

Paint colour for window casing matters. Matching the casing to the baseboard and door casing in a consistent paint colour creates a unified trim package. White and bright white are classic choices, but matching the trim to the wall colour in a satin finish creates a contemporary, tone-on-tone effect.

D&D Interior Services installs all styles of window casing and interior trim. We help clients select the right profile for their home's architecture and execute clean, tight installations with proper expansion gaps and filled nail holes.
