Types of Drywall Explained

By D&D Interior Services Team February 2, 2026 7 min read Blog

Not all drywall is the same colour, weight, or purpose. Choosing the right type for each room is the difference between a wall that lasts decades and one that fails. Here is how the main types compare for Ontario homes.

Standard Drywall

Standard gypsum board, usually half-inch thick, is the workhorse of most Ontario homes. It is used on the majority of interior walls and ceilings in living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways where moisture, fire, and sound are not special concerns.

It is the most affordable option and the easiest to cut and finish. Quarter-inch versions exist for curved walls, and three-eighths board is handy for skim-coating over old plaster, but half-inch is the default for new work.

Lightweight versions of standard board have become popular because they are noticeably easier to lift and hang, especially on ceilings. They finish the same as regular board, so for most living-space walls in a Waterloo Region home they are a sensible default.

Moisture-Resistant Drywall (Green Board)

Green board carries a water-repellent face and core, making it the right choice for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basement walls where humidity is high but the surface will not be directly wetted. It resists the mould growth that plagues standard board in damp Waterloo Region basements.

Green board is not waterproof. In showers and other wet areas, a cement board or a dedicated tile backer is required behind the tile, while green board handles the surrounding walls and ceiling.

There is also a step up called purple or mould-tough board, which adds dedicated mould resistance on top of moisture resistance. For finished basements in older Kitchener homes that tend to feel damp, it is a worthwhile upgrade over standard green board.

Fire-Rated Drywall (Type X)

Type X drywall, typically 5/8 inch, contains glass fibres that hold the board together longer under flame, slowing fire spread. The Ontario Building Code requires it on specific assemblies, most commonly the wall and ceiling between an attached garage and the living space.

Type C offers an even higher rating for demanding assemblies. Because fire-rated board is heavier and thicker, it costs more and is slightly harder to handle, but it is non-negotiable where code calls for it.

Furnace rooms, shared walls in semi-detached homes, and the separations around a basement suite are the other places fire-rated board commonly appears. Because these are safety and inspection items, it is worth confirming the rated locations before boarding rather than guessing.

Soundproof Drywall

Acoustic or sound-dampening drywall sandwiches a viscoelastic layer between two gypsum panels to absorb vibration. It dramatically reduces noise transfer and is popular for home theatres, shared bedroom walls, and basement suites in Kitchener-Waterloo.

A single sheet of acoustic board can replace a built-up assembly of standard board and damping compound, saving wall thickness. It is the simplest path to a quieter room without major framing changes.

It works best as part of a system. Pairing acoustic board with dense insulation in the cavity, sealed outlets, and a solid-core door delivers far more quiet than the board alone, since most noise sneaks through gaps rather than the wall surface.

Abuse and Impact-Resistant Drywall

Abuse-resistant board uses a denser core and tougher face to survive high-traffic areas like mudrooms, hallways, garages, and rental units. Impact-resistant versions add reinforcement that resists punctures from furniture and equipment.

For families with kids or for landlords managing wear and tear, spending a little more on these boards in collision-prone spots reduces patching and repainting over the years.

It is rarely worth using throughout a home, but in the spots that take the most abuse, the longevity pays for itself. A hallway in a busy household or the entry of a rental unit are the classic candidates in Waterloo Region.

Choosing the Right Type Room by Room

A well-built Ontario home rarely uses one type throughout. Standard board covers most rooms, green board handles bathrooms and basement perimeters, Type X protects the garage assembly, acoustic board quiets bedrooms and theatres, and abuse-resistant board guards busy corridors.

Mixing types correctly is where experience matters. D&D Interior Services specs the right board for every space in your Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, or Guelph project. Contact us for a free walkthrough and estimate.

The good news is that choosing the right board adds little to a project's overall cost because the upgrades only go where they are needed. Spending a bit more on the few sheets that matter is far cheaper than living with mould, noise, or a failed inspection later.
