Colour Selection and Planning
Two-tone painting — different colours on walls and trim, or on upper and lower wall sections — adds depth and character when executed correctly, and looks messy when it isn't.
The most common two-tone interior approach is a contrasting colour between walls and trim. White or off-white trim against a coloured wall is the classic pairing, and remains the most requested interior paint approach in renovations across every style of home. The trim acts as a frame that highlights the wall colour.
Preparation Is Everything
Panel moulding applications create two-tone opportunities on a single wall. Wainscoting — whether traditional beadboard, flat panel, or board-and-batten — divides the wall into upper and lower zones that can receive different colours. The lower zone in a deeper shade of the wall colour, or in white, creates a layered effect that reads as architectural detail.
Chair rail installation establishes the datum for a two-tone wall. A chair rail at 900 mm to 1050 mm creates the horizontal division, and the wall below the rail can be painted in a contrasting colour from the wall above. This is effective in dining rooms, hallways, and bedrooms where the proportions allow both zones to be read clearly.
Professional Results That Last
Ceiling treatment in a two-tone room affects how the space reads. Painting the ceiling the same colour as the upper walls creates a seamless transition that makes the room feel expansive. A ceiling in a clearly lighter colour than the walls is the most common and forgiving approach. A dark ceiling in a room with white walls creates a bold, cocooning effect.
Edge quality at two-tone junctions defines the result. A crisp, clean line at a chair rail or panel moulding is the mark of careful masking and steady technique. A jagged or irregular line at the colour change draws attention to the execution rather than the colour choice. Take the time to mask correctly — it's worth it.
