Custom Tile Shower Design for Ontario Bathrooms

Design a tile shower that will last decades and look great doing it. Material choices, patterns, and installation considerations for Ontario homeowners.

Bathroom Renovation Essentials

A custom tile shower is one of the most indulgent yet practical upgrades in any Ontario bathroom renovation. Done well, it's an investment that adds real value to the home and delivers a daily spa-like experience. Done poorly, it becomes a grout-cleaning nightmare or, worse, a moisture problem.

Waterproofing is the foundation of any successful tile shower. The substrate must be properly waterproofed before a single tile is set — cement board, hydroban membrane, or RedGuard coating over the full wet area. Grout is not waterproof. Tile is not waterproof. The waterproofing layer is the critical technical element.

Design Choices That Matter

Large-format tiles (12x24" or larger) are the dominant trend in contemporary Ontario bathrooms. They create fewer grout lines, a cleaner look, and they're actually easier to clean. The trade-off is that the substrate must be very flat — large tiles show any variation in the surface beneath.

Accent tiles — a mosaic niche, a decorative border strip, or a contrasting floor tile — provide visual interest and help define zones within the shower. The entrance wall, niche, and floor are natural focal points where a different material or pattern can create a curated, custom feel.

Hiring the Right Contractor

Grout selection affects both aesthetics and maintenance. Epoxy grout is the most durable and stain-resistant option but requires skilled installation. Sanded grout for wider joints, unsanded for narrow. Dark grout in light tile is a bold contemporary choice; matching grout minimizes the visual grid.

D&D Interior Services builds custom tile showers from substrate preparation through final grouting. We work with your material selections or can source from our supplier network, and we coordinate with plumbers for pre-tile rough-in inspections.
