Kitchen Renovation Planning
Airless spray application produces a factory-quality finish on kitchen cabinets that brush-and-roll methods simply can't match — here's what the process involves and why it matters.
Spray application atomizes paint into fine particles that settle uniformly across a surface, producing a glass-smooth finish without the texture of brush marks or roller stipple. For kitchen cabinets — where the painted surface is viewed at close range, touched frequently, and expected to look like factory finish — spray application is the professional standard.
Design and Material Selection
Complete masking of the kitchen space is required before spray application. Walls, countertops, appliances, and adjacent surfaces must be fully covered because airborne paint particles settle over a wide area. This masking setup is time-consuming but non-negotiable for interior spray work.
HVLP (high volume, low pressure) spray systems are the tool of choice for cabinet painting. HVLP guns produce a fine, consistent spray pattern with minimal overspray compared to airless systems, making them suitable for enclosed interior spaces. The low pressure means less paint is wasted through overspray and the finish quality is superior.
Project Timeline and Costs
Between-coat sanding with 220-grit sandpaper is required even with spray application. Light sanding levels any texture that developed in the previous coat, removes dust nibs, and provides mechanical adhesion for the next coat. This meticulous multi-coat process — prime, sand, topcoat 1, sand, topcoat 2, sand, final coat — is what produces a durable, smooth result.
Cure time for freshly painted cabinets is a commonly overlooked factor. Water-based alkyd paint, the current professional standard for cabinets, reaches full hardness approximately 2 to 4 weeks after application. During this cure period, the surfaces should be handled gently and not subjected to heavy use or cleaning. Putting full loads in cabinets immediately after painting risks surface marring.
