Renovating for Aging in Place in Ontario Homes

Planning renovations that support long-term independent living protects independence and reduces future relocation costs.

Understanding Renovating for Aging in Place in Ontario Homes

Aging in place β€” remaining in your own home as physical capabilities change β€” is the goal of the majority of Ontario seniors. Planning renovations that support this goal before the need becomes urgent allows changes to be made thoughtfully as part of a broader renovation rather than as reactive modifications after a fall or mobility event.

Bathroom modifications are the most critical aging-in-place renovations. Curbless (zero-threshold) shower entries eliminate the step over the tub or shower threshold that creates fall risk. Grab bars at the toilet and in the shower provide critical stability support. A comfort-height toilet (17"–18") is easier to sit and rise from than standard height.

Key Considerations

Kitchen accessibility improvements include pull-out shelves and drawers that eliminate reaching into deep cabinets, lowered countertop sections for seated work, and lever-style faucets and hardware that operate with reduced grip strength. These modifications improve daily function across all ages but are particularly valuable as dexterity changes.

Flooring throughout the home should be chosen for slip resistance. Highly polished floors β€” marble, high-gloss hardwood β€” are beautiful but create significant fall risk on wet feet or in socks. Matte finishes, low-pile carpet in bedrooms, and anti-slip treatments in wet areas reduce fall risk without sacrificing aesthetic quality.

Getting Started

Doorway widening to a minimum of 32" clear β€” ideally 36" β€” accommodates walkers, wheelchairs, and other mobility aids. Most standard Ontario interior doors are 30" or less, and widening them during a broader renovation is far less costly than doing it as a standalone project driven by urgent need.

D&D Interior Services incorporates aging-in-place modifications into renovation projects across Ontario. Whether as a standalone accessibility renovation or as modifications integrated into a broader kitchen or bathroom project, we design and build for long-term independent living.
