Painting With Kids & Pets in the Home

By D&D Interior Services Team March 4, 2026 7 min read Blog

Most Kitchener-Waterloo families can't simply move out for a few days while the house gets painted. With kids, dogs, and cats in the picture, painting becomes as much about safety and logistics as it is about colour. The good news: with the right products and a smart plan, you can repaint with the whole family in residence. Here is how.

Choose Low-VOC and Zero-VOC Paints

VOCs, the volatile organic compounds that give traditional paint its sharp smell, are the main thing to manage when little ones and pets are around. Children breathe faster and pets are lower to the ground and closer to off-gassing surfaces, so reducing fumes matters more in a full house.

Modern low-VOC and zero-VOC paints, like Benjamin Moore Natura and Sherwin-Williams Harmony, deliver durable, washable finishes with little to no odour. They have made painting around a family genuinely practical, where decades ago you would have wanted everyone out of the house.

Contain the Work Room by Room

The simplest way to keep a household running during a paint job is to work in one zone at a time and seal it off. Closing doors, hanging plastic in open doorways, and keeping the active room off-limits lets the rest of the home function normally while one space gets painted and dried.

Painting on a schedule that fits your family helps too: tackling a child's bedroom while they're at school, or doing the main floor in a sequence that always leaves a clear, usable path through the house. A good crew plans the order of rooms around how you actually live.

Keep Pets Safe and Calm

Wet paint, open cans, ladders, and a strange crew in the house all stress pets and create hazards. A curious dog with a wagging tail near a fresh wall, or a cat that bolts through a doorway, can wreck a finish and hurt itself. The safest plan is to keep pets in a closed-off room or crate away from the work, or arrange a day at daycare or a friend's place for the heaviest painting days.

Even with low-odour paint, give pets a fume-free zone to retreat to and keep their food, water, and litter well away from any drying surfaces or cleanup. Most pets settle quickly once they have a quiet space that's clearly theirs during the project.

Ventilate Smartly

Even with low-VOC products, fresh airflow keeps the whole family comfortable. When weather allows, open a window in the room being painted and run fans to push air outward. In a KW winter, brief cross-ventilation plus exhaust fans clears any odour without chilling the house.

Direct airflow away from living and sleeping areas and toward an exhaust point so any lingering smell leaves the home rather than drifting to where the kids sleep. Good ventilation plus low-odour paint is what makes occupied painting feel like no big deal.

Manage Mess, Cords, and Hazards

A household with kids and pets has more ways for a paint job to go sideways: tripping over drop cloths, knocking a tray, grabbing a wet wall. Containing tools, taping down drop-cloth edges, capping cans between coats, and storing brushes and rollers out of reach at the end of each day keeps everyone safe.

Cleaning as you go rather than leaving an open work zone overnight matters more with small hands and paws around. A tidy, contained site is a safe site, and it is one of the things a professional crew handles without being asked.

Let a Pro Handle the Logistics

Painting around a busy family is doable, but it is a lot to juggle on top of work and school runs. A professional crew brings low-odour products, proper containment, and a room-by-room plan that keeps your home livable from day one to done, and gets the project finished fast so normal life resumes sooner.
