Painting Trim and Baseboards: Techniques for Perfect Edges

Colour Selection and Planning

Clean, crisp trim and baseboard paint is the detail that separates an amateur paint job from a professional one — here's the technique breakdown.

Sequence matters: the professional sequence for painting trim and walls is wall colour first, then trim second. This allows the wall roller to overlap slightly onto the trim without concern, because the trim coat will be applied afterward. Attempting to paint trim first and walls second requires cutting in perfectly at every edge — harder and more error-prone.

Preparation Is Everything

Surface preparation for trim: sand all existing trim lightly with 120-grit sandpaper to degloss the surface and improve adhesion. Fill any nail holes, dents, or gaps at corner joints with lightweight spackling or wood filler. Sand flush after drying. Wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust before painting.

Brush selection for trim: a 2-inch angled sash brush allows controlled cutting at wall-trim junctions and provides enough coverage width for standard baseboard and door casing profiles. The angle allows the bristle tip to maintain contact with the work surface even at wall-adjacent positions where a flat brush tip wouldn't reach.

Professional Results That Last

Masking vs freehand cutting: masking the wall above the baseboard produces the cleanest result for most DIY painters. Use blue painter's tape applied firmly to the wall surface, pressing the lower edge down with a putty knife to prevent bleed-under. Remove the tape while the paint is still slightly wet (not fully dry) for the cleanest edge.

Sheen for trim: semi-gloss is the standard for all interior trim — baseboards, door casings, window sills, and door faces. The higher sheen provides a durable, washable surface that contrasts intentionally with the lower sheen of adjacent wall surfaces. Apply in smooth, even strokes with a well-loaded brush, working with the grain direction of the trim profile.
