Colour Selection and Planning
Dark paint colours require specific preparation, primer, and application techniques to achieve the rich, even results visible in design inspiration photos — here's what professionals know.
Dark paint colours reveal surface imperfections more than lighter colours because raking light creates shadows in any surface variation. Before painting in deep navy, forest green, or charcoal, the walls need level-5 skim coating or at minimum thorough patching, sanding, and priming of any textured areas.
Preparation Is Everything
Grey tinted primer is essential under dark topcoats. Applying deep blue or dark green over a white primer requires 3 or more coats to achieve full colour saturation. A grey or coloured primer tinted to approximately 50% of the topcoat colour reduces the number of topcoats needed for opacity to 2 (sometimes 1.5 coats).
Brush and roll technique for dark paints: dark coloured paint shows lap marks more readily than light colours because the opacity variation between fully wet and partially dried areas is more visible. Maintain a consistently wet edge by working in sections and connecting each stroke to the still-wet previous section before it begins to dry.
Professional Results That Last
Sheen selection for dark walls: flat finishes minimize reflection and make dark colours appear deeper and more saturated. Eggshell provides slight washability with minimal sheen variation. Semi-gloss or gloss in dark colours creates a dramatic, lacquer-like effect but amplifies every surface imperfection and is challenging to touch up invisibly.
Lighting coordination: dark walls absorb light rather than reflecting it, which makes room lighting level appear lower after repainting. Assess your existing lighting before committing to dark walls and plan for additional lighting if the room will feel too dim after the change. Warm-toned lighting (2700K to 3000K) complements dark earthy colours; cooler lighting (3500K to 4000K) suits cooler-toned darks.
