Kitchen Renovation Planning
The kitchen work triangle is the classic planning principle for functional kitchen layouts — but modern open-plan kitchens and multi-cook households require updates to this framework.
The traditional work triangle connects the three primary work zones — refrigerator, sink, and stove — in a triangular pattern that minimizes distance traveled during food preparation. The original efficiency target was a total triangle perimeter of 4 to 7 metres, with no single leg shorter than 1.2 metres or longer than 2.7 metres.
Design and Material Selection
Modern kitchen design has evolved toward multiple activity zones rather than a single work triangle. Larger kitchens serve multiple users simultaneously, requiring more than one preparation zone. A secondary prep sink at an island, a beverage station away from the primary work area, and a dedicated baking zone are all examples of this zone-based approach.
Island placement relative to the perimeter work triangle affects how the kitchen flows. An island positioned within the work triangle blocks efficient circulation between work zones. An island positioned outside the triangle — at the perimeter of the primary work area — provides prep surface and seating without interrupting the cooking workflow.
Project Timeline and Costs
Galley kitchen layouts, where work surfaces face each other along two parallel walls, are among the most efficient single-cook kitchen configurations. The work triangle is collapsed to a single corridor, minimizing travel distance. The limitation is limited counter space on each run and poor accommodation of multiple cooks.
L-shaped and U-shaped layouts are the most popular configurations for open-plan kitchens in Ontario renovation projects. The L-shaped layout provides clear connection to the adjacent living or dining area with an efficient interior work area. The U-shaped layout maximizes perimeter counter space but requires a minimum room dimension of 2.4 metres between the two parallel runs.
