Flooring Continuity in Open Plan Spaces: Making the Right Choice

Choosing the Right Flooring

Extending the same flooring material through an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area creates a seamless, spacious feel — but the choice of material must work across all three functions.

Continuous flooring through open-plan spaces eliminates the visual interruptions created by transitions and different materials between zones. In a typical Ontario semi-detached or detached home, extending one flooring material from the entry through the kitchen and into the living room makes the combined space read as larger and more cohesive.

Installation and Timeline

Hardwood flooring in an open plan requires managing the moisture differential between kitchen and living zones. Water spills and steam near the sink or dishwasher can affect solid hardwood. For open-plan applications where the flooring runs through a kitchen, engineered hardwood (more dimensionally stable) or LVP (fully waterproof) is more appropriate than solid hardwood.

LVP is the most practical open-plan flooring choice for most Ontario households. A quality 8 mm or thicker LVP with authentic wood texture provides the look of hardwood with complete waterproofing, making it suitable from the entry through kitchen and into living areas without product change or transition strip interruption.

Care and Maintenance

Large-format tile through an open plan creates a clean, modern aesthetic but is cold underfoot in bedrooms and areas without radiant heating. In open plans that include bedroom access, tile is typically limited to the kitchen and dining area, with a deliberate transition to a warmer material in the living and sleeping areas.

Consistent flooring direction across an open plan is the key installation decision. Running planks parallel to the longest dimension of the space elongates the visual field. Diagonal installation creates movement but requires more waste and is harder to match at doorways. Choose direction thoughtfully — it's the most impactful variable in how the finished floor reads.
