Fireplace Surround Renovation Ideas for Ontario Homes

Update a dated fireplace with a modern surround. Material options, costs, and design approaches for Ontario homeowners.

Planning Your Renovation

The fireplace is the focal point of most living rooms, and a dated surround can drag down the entire aesthetic of the space. Renovating the surround is one of the highest-impact, relatively accessible upgrades available to Ontario homeowners.

Tile is the most flexible fireplace surround material. Large-format porcelain slabs create a sleek, contemporary look. Zellige or handmade tile brings artisan character. Subway tile offers a clean, timeless appeal. Whatever the style, tile can be replaced without touching the firebox itself.

What the Process Looks Like

Natural stone — marble, granite, limestone, or soapstone — creates a sense of permanence and luxury that no other material quite matches. Marble in particular transforms a fireplace into a genuine architectural statement. The natural variation means each installation is unique.

Shiplap and board-and-batten surrounds have surged in popularity for their clean, transitional aesthetic. Painted white or in a contrasting colour, wood surrounds give the fireplace a more casual, family-room feel. Proper heat-resistant installation is critical to ensure safety.

Working With D&D Interior Services

Concrete surrounds are the choice for ultra-contemporary spaces. Poured or precast concrete, sealed and polished, creates a seamless architectural form that feels custom and distinctive. The industrial quality works beautifully in modern and loft-inspired interiors.

D&D Interior Services handles full fireplace surround renovations — from removing the old surround to installing new tile, stone, or millwork — coordinating with any required hearth extension or mantel work. We ensure all installations meet Ontario building and fire codes.
