Drywall Basics
Drywall repair is one of those renovation tasks that looks simple but reveals significant skill differences between amateur and professional work. A properly repaired wall is invisible after painting. An improperly repaired wall shows every flaw under direct or raking light, particularly in freshly painted rooms.
Small hole repairs β nail pops, anchor holes, minor dings β require the right technique to match the texture of the surrounding wall. If the existing wall has a knockdown texture, the patch must be textured to match before painting. A perfectly smooth patch on a textured wall is as obvious as a poorly repaired patch.
Installation Process
Larger repairs β typically anything larger than a door handle hole β require proper backing to support the new drywall patch. A floating patch without backing inevitably cracks at the edges. Installing proper backing clips or a wood backing piece creates a rigid foundation that prevents future cracking at the repair boundary.
Water damage repairs are the most technically demanding. Water-damaged drywall must be completely replaced β it cannot be dried and repainted reliably because the paper face is compromised and the gypsum core has lost structural integrity. Addressing the moisture source before repairing is essential; repairing without fixing the leak is wasted work.
Finishing for a Flawless Result
New construction drywall finishing is classified in levels from Level 1 (basic tape only) through Level 5 (skim coat, perfect for critical lighting). Most residential interiors are finished at Level 4 β taped, coated, and sanded to a level appropriate for flat or eggshell paint. Level 5 is specified for walls receiving semi-gloss paint or in rooms with extreme sidelight exposure.
