Understanding Polished Concrete and Stained Concrete Floors: Interior Design Options for Ontario Homes | D&D Interior Services

Concrete floors are moving from industrial to residential design — polished, stained, and sealed concrete offers a unique, durable, low-maintenance flooring alternative.

Polished concrete is achieved through a multi-step grinding and polishing process using progressively finer diamond abrasive heads. The result ranges from a satin matte to a high-gloss mirror-like surface. Polished concrete is extremely durable, cleanable, and hypoallergenic — no fibres, grout lines, or adhesives to harbour allergens.

Key Considerations

Acid staining creates colour variation in concrete by reacting with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete surface. The colours are typically earth tones — browns, rusts, greens, and blacks — and the pattern is irregular and organic rather than uniform, giving the floor a mottled, stone-like character.

Water-based concrete stain provides more colour choice than acid stain, including blues, reds, and brighter tones, with a more predictable, uniform result. The colour penetrates the concrete rather than sitting on top, creating permanence. Multiple colours can be combined for artistic floor designs.

Getting Started

Epoxy coating systems are applied over existing concrete to provide a hard, chemical-resistant, easily cleanable floor system. Commonly seen in garages and workshops, residential-grade epoxy systems are available in satin or gloss finishes with aggregate broadcast for slip resistance. They're particularly appropriate for basement floors where a bright, cleanable surface is desired.

Existing concrete slab condition determines what's achievable. For polished or stained concrete, the slab must have sufficient aggregate exposure, be free of major cracking, and have no existing adhesive or paint residue that would prevent the finish from adhering or polishing cleanly.
