Paint Colour Consultation: Why It's Worth It for Ontario Homeowners

Choosing paint colours confidently is harder than it looks. Professional colour consultation transforms the experience and outcome.

Understanding Paint Colour Consultation: Why It's Worth It for Ontario Homeowners

Choosing paint colours for a home should be simple — yet it's consistently one of the most stressful aspects of interior renovation for Ontario homeowners. The sheer number of choices, the way colours change under different lighting conditions, and the fear of expensive mistakes combine to make colour selection genuinely difficult.

The fundamental challenge is that colour looks completely different in different lighting conditions. A paint chip under the lighting in a paint store looks nothing like that colour in your home under morning natural light, afternoon sun, or evening artificial light. The only reliable way to evaluate a colour is to test it on your actual walls in your actual home.

Key Considerations

Large sample swatches — at least 8" x 8", ideally larger — are essential for evaluation. The standard 2" x 2" paint chips available at paint stores are too small to give an accurate impression of what the colour will look like over a large surface. The paint chip effect makes light colours seem lighter and dark colours seem darker than they appear at scale.

Undertone is the most important and least understood aspect of colour selection. Every 'grey' has either warm (beige, pink, purple) or cool (blue, green) undertones. Every 'white' has undertones that will either clash with or complement your floors, trim, and fixed elements. A professional colour consultant identifies undertone relationships that are invisible to untrained eyes.

Getting Started

The cost of a professional colour consultation is modest relative to the cost of repainting after a bad choice. Most colour consultants charge $150–$300 for a full home consultation — far less than the labour and material cost of repainting even a single room because the first choice didn't work out.

D&D Interior Services provides colour consultation as part of our painting projects. Our experienced team helps clients identify colours that work beautifully in their specific home's light, with their specific floors and furnishings, so the result is one they love living with.
