Understanding Ceiling Medallion and Decorative Ceiling Installation | D&D Interior Services

Ceiling medallions frame light fixtures and add architectural detail to otherwise plain ceilings — these ornamental elements are available in foam, polyurethane, and plaster.

Ceiling medallions are installed around light fixture mounting points to provide a decorative frame that enlarges the visual impact of the fixture. They're particularly effective in dining rooms, entryways, and primary bedrooms where a light fixture is a focal point.

Key Considerations

Material options for ceiling medallions range from traditional plaster (heavy, expensive, but excellent detail resolution) to polyurethane foam (lightweight, paintable, highly detailed, and installation-friendly). Modern polyurethane medallions are virtually indistinguishable from plaster when painted.

Sizing a medallion relative to the fixture and ceiling height: the medallion diameter should typically be 1 to 1.5 times the diameter of the fixture it frames. A small medallion behind a large chandelier looks undersized; an oversized medallion with a small pendant looks disproportionate.

Getting Started

Installation uses construction adhesive at the contact surface between the medallion and the ceiling, supplemented with screws for heavier medallions or ceiling surfaces that don't provide a smooth bonding surface. The cut-out at the centre is matched to the fixture canopy diameter with a hole saw or coping tool.

Crown moulding can be combined with a ceiling medallion to create a fully designed ceiling composition. The medallion provides a focal point at the fixture; the crown moulding creates the frame at the ceiling perimeter. Between them, a ceiling that would otherwise be ignored becomes a designed element that completes the room.
